Why TrueCarCost Exists
Most people underestimate what a car actually costs to own — not because they're bad at math, but because the real costs are scattered across a dozen different places and mostly invisible until the bill shows up. A sticker price feels concrete. Five years of depreciation, insurance, and maintenance doesn't.
What makes this different
TrueCarCost is a small, independent, ad-supported site — not a division of a larger car-shopping or valuation company. That means a few things in practice:
- Real pricing data, refreshed monthly. Vehicle prices and resale values come from actual current market listings, not editorial estimates. See exactly how on the methodology page.
- No account, no signup, no paywall. Every calculator is free to use, with no email required to see a result.
- The whole tool, not a feature. Cost of ownership isn't a secondary tab bolted onto a car-shopping platform here — it's the entire site.
- Transparent about what we don't know. Where a vehicle is too new or has no valid resale comparison in the data, we say so on that vehicle's page rather than guessing.
How the site stays free
TrueCarCost is supported by display advertising and, where relevant, affiliate partnerships with lenders and other services — clearly labeled as "Related Offers" wherever they appear. We never let a partnership change a number: the cost estimates you see are calculated the same way regardless of which offers happen to be showing.
